Impress your friends with a jug of Passionfruit Paloma Spritz

Get ready to impress your friends with minimal effort! This recipe makes a jug for four, perfect for sharing.

Spritz Ingredients:

  • 2x cans Coco Loco Passionfruit (the main event!)

  • 200mL Citrus Agave Spirit from Imbue Distillery

  • 250mL Sodaly Blood Orange

  • 100mL fresh lime juice

  • Handful of fresh mint leaves, more if desired

  • Ice cubes to serve (made with coconut water for extra electrolytes)

Six Simple Steps:

  1. Prep: Grab a large jug (at least 1.5-2 litre capacity) and your ingredients.

  2. Combine ingredients: Pour both cans of Coco Loco Passionfruit, the Imbue Citrus Agave Spirit, the Sodaly Blood Orange, and the fresh lime juice into your jug.

  3. Stir gently: Give everything a good, gentle stir with a wooden spoon (or a spatular will do) to combine the flavours without losing the fizz.

  4. Add herbs: Take a handful of fresh mint leaves and gently 'clap' them between your palms. This releases their aromatic oils. Add them to the jug.

  5. Chill in fridge: Keep the cocktail spritz in the fridge until you're ready to pour and drink.

  6. Serve and garnish: Fill individual glasses with fresh ice. Pour your delicious Coco Loco Passionfruit Paloma Spritz into each glass, making sure everyone gets some of that fragrant mint. Garnish with an extra sprig of mint or a lime wheel if you're feeling fancy.

Agave Spirit: What is it?

You might have noticed we're using "Citrus Agave Spirit" from Imbue Distillery instead of the more familiar Tequila or Mezcal. Agave Spirit is like Tequila, however it's a matter of provenance and naming rights.

Tequila vs. Mezcal vs. Agave Spirit: What's the Difference?

  • Tequila: To be called Tequila, a spirit must be made in specific regions of Mexico (primarily Jalisco) from at least 51% blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber). It undergoes a specific production process, usually involving steam-baking the agave piñas (hearts).

  • Mezcal: Also a product of Mexico, Mezcal can be made from a wider variety of agave plants and is traditionally made by roasting the agave piñas in earthen pits, which imparts its characteristic smoky flavour.

  • Agave Spirit: An "Agave Spirit" like Imbue's is made from the agave plant, often following similar distillation techniques to Tequila or Mezcal, but it cannot legally be called Tequila or Mezcal because it's not produced in Mexico. It's a fantastic way for local distilleries to craft unique, high-quality spirits of the same nature as Mexico's most popular. By choosing a locally made spirit for you're cocktails and tipples, you're supporting Australian distillers while enjoying a fantastic, high-quality drop in your low sugar alcohol spritz.

The Morning After: The benefits of choosing low sugar alcohol

Let's face it, no one likes feeling sluggish and headachy the morning after a fun night. While alcohol itself is the primary culprit for hangovers, the amount of sugar in your drinks can significantly worsen the experience. This is precisely why our Coco Loco Hard Seltzers are consciously made to be low sugar. Our Coco Loco drinks are brewed to be naturally low sugar alcohol, and with just 3.6g sugar per can they're almost 99% sugar-free.

This Passionfruit Paloma Spritz recipe is also a good low sugar alcohol, with Sodaly and Agave Spirit both being no sugar ingredients.

An Undesirable Synergy: Sugar + Alcohol

Here’s why choosing low sugar alcohol options can be helpful for your well-being (when drinking in moderation and within the guidelines outlined by ADF — review guidelines here):

  1. Dehydration Double Whammy: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes you pee more, leading to dehydration. Alcohol drinks that are high in sugar can increase this diuretic effect as your body uses water to process the sugar. This combined dehydration is a major contributor to headaches and fatigue.
(Reference: Swift, R. and Davidson, D. (1998) Alcohol hangover. Alcohol Health & Research World, 22(1), pp. 54–60.)

  2. Gut Irritation: Excessive sugar and alcohol can both irritate the lining of your stomach and intestines, leading to nausea, stomach upset, and general discomfort. Choosing low sugar alcohol can reduce this irritation. (
Reference: Vonghia, L. et al. (2008) Alcohol and the liver. European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 20(8), pp. 723–729.)

  3. Blood Sugar Shock: Sugary drinks cause rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar. When combined with alcohol, which also affects glucose metabolism, this can lead to an even more pronounced "sugar crash" the next day, manifesting as fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

  4. Empty Calories: High-sugar alcoholic drinks are often packed with empty calories. If you're mindful of your calorie intake or aiming for a following a ketogenic lifestyle, choosing low sugar alcohol options like our  coconut water hard seltzer, as well as our spritz mixes can make a significant difference.

By focusing on delicious, naturally lower-sugar ingredients like Passionfruit Hard Seltzer and Australian Agave Spirit, our Paloma Spritz lets you enjoy the festivities without the dreaded after-effects. So, go ahead, mix up a jug of this fantastic low sugar alcohol cocktail spritz recipe, and cheers to a more balanced, lighter spring!
